Nebraska Police Captain Faces Backlash After Leaving Toddler in Hot Van

A police captain in Nebraska and her partner were cited with child abuse after allegedly leaving their 2-year-old daughter in their locked, hot minivan while they went fishing. Another couple who were fishing at the same lake as Mayde McGuire and her partner, Mary Tobiassen, found the girl in the vehicle. Police said that McGuire, 54, and Tobiassen, 49, were fishing at Pawnee Lake in Lincoln, Nebraska, on the afternoon of Sunday, August 23, when the other couple walked by their black minivan in the parking lot. The couple noticed that a young girl was "crying and screaming” in the vehicle, according to authorities. Once they realized that the toddler was alone in the locked van, they called 911 for help. The Lancaster County Sheriff's Department addressed the situation during a press conference on Monday, August 24, and confirmed that McGuire is a police captain with the Lincoln Police Department. She was off duty at the time of the incident. Lancaster County Sheriff Terry Wagner said that the toddler was in the vehicle by herself for at least 28 minutes before the other couple spotted her. The outdoor temperature was 78 degrees Fahrenheit at the time, though Wagner noted that the “interior of a vehicle can get extremely hot” in a short amount of time. McGuire took the girl out of the vehicle before deputies arrived at the scene. Police confirmed that the toddler was uninjured and has since been given back to her parents. McGuire took a preliminary breath test at the scene, and it was determined that she had blood alcohol content of 0.108. An investigation was launched into the matter, and McGuire was placed on leave. Both McGuire and Tobiassen were cited for misdemeanor child abuse, but neither of them was arrested. It is not currently clear whether McGuire or Tobiassen have entered pleas or retained legal counsel following the incident. The Lancaster County Sheriff's Department had no additional updates to share when contacted by Us about the case. Following the incident, the couple who found the toddler in the vehicle spoke to KOLN about the experience. Izabella Glover claimed that the girl had gotten out of her car seat and "crawled over" to the front seat of the minivan. She then started "banging" on the window. Glover added that the girl appeared to be "in distress” as she seemingly searched for her parents. Lil Nas X celebrated “10,000 days alive” with an update on his life after completing rehab. “Tomorrow is my 10,000th day alive,” Lil Nas X , 27, shared via TikTok on Monday, August 24. “I made it! A lot of ya’all won’t make it but I made it.” The “Montero (Call Me by Your Name)” singer (real name Montero Lamar Hill) was born on April 9, 1999, which indeed meant that Tuesday was the 10,000th day since his birth. Lil Nas X, 27, showed off a cake with “Happy 10,000th Day” written in red icing on top of vanilla frosting. (He later posted an Instagram Story showing the frosting all over his face.) In August 2025, Lil Nas X (real name Montero Lamar Hill) was arrested and briefly hospitalized after being seen walking without clothing along Ventura Boulevard in Los Angeles. He pleaded not guilty to four felonies: three counts of battery with injury on a police officer and one count of resisting arrest. The “Industry Baby” rapper was ultimately diagnosed with bipolar disorder while spending two months at an Arizona inpatient treatment center. A California judge agreed to dismiss the charges against Lil Nas X in April, provided he kept up with his outpatient treatment program and did not break any additional laws for two consecutive years. Lil Nas X’s lawyer Christy O’Connor told the court that the musician was following a “rigorous mental health regiment,” including regularly seeing a psychiatrist and a psychotherapist. On Tuesday, August 26, Lil Nas X made light of one way his life has changed since completing his inpatient treatment. “Ever since I got out of rehab, everybody is only nice to me,” he joked via TikTok. “I can be like, ‘Hey,’ and they say, ‘Oh my god, you’re so brave!’ I could try to post a thirst trap on my Instagram Story and there’s going to be somebody [that will post], ‘Keep fighting king.’” Previously, Lil Nas X updated fans in June that he was “doing better” and “feeling better” following his treatment. “I’ve been in rehab for a few months, and then since then I’ve been, you know, back at home — whether it’s in Atlanta with my family or in Los Angeles with myself, friends and whatnot — and trying to ground myself down to Earth and get out of my head,” he said via an Instagram video at the time. “I have a therapist now and a psychiatrist, which has been really helpful.” He added, “When I got my bipolar disorder diagnosis, I feel like I had known for the past few years, but I didn’t want to admit to it ’cause I didn’t want to have to take medication and, I don’t know, have people think different of me. Sarah Korseki / SWNSThe doctor got her an appointment immediately and, after taking a scan of her meibomian glands, diagnosed her with MGD, a condition where the oil-producing glands in the eyelids do not work properly, which can cause dry eyes, irritation and damage to the corneal surface in August 2022.Sarah’s doctor said that her MGD was likely caused by her sleeping in her eye makeup, as this can cause makeup to block the openings of the meibomian glands and stop them from producing oil.Since her diagnosis, Sarah has stopped wearing eye makeup, other than under-eye concealer.Since her diagnosis, Sarah has stopped wearing eye makeup, other than under-eye concealer. Sarah Korseki / SWNS“It’s too risky to wear eyeshadow or mascara, even if I were to wash it off,” she said.To help alleviate the pain, her doctor gave her a contact bandage, a protective shield that looks like a contact lens, which prevents the eyelid from getting stuck to the eye.“Now I have those; when I get a corneal tear, I pop one in, and it eases the pain by 75%,” she said.She has also tried IPL treatment, where pulses of light are applied to the eyelid and cheeks to help melt thickened oils blocking the meibomian glands, and didn’t have a corneal tear for 18 months after undergoing the procedure.“I’ve tried out 85,000 things to find out what works for my eyes,” she said.“There’s no cure for it, which is the hardest thing, and anything that helps isn’t covered by insurance.“The money I’ve spent on this is asinine.”

I had to learn how to sort of do everything again.” Nearly three years prior, Green spoke candidly about his health journey and claimed doctors had initially diagnosed him with vertigo and ulcerative colitis. While Green was bedridden for three months, it was unclear what the illness was stemming from. “Then these neurological things started happening after the vertigo, and that was — it was four and a half years of my life. Dawson’s Creek alum Busy Philipps is opening up about her recovery after being diagnosed with a brain tumor. “I’m grateful that I’m alive,” Philipps, 47, told People in an interview published Wednesday, August 26, revealing that a Prenuvo full-body scan in February confirmed the presence of a grade 2 oligodendroglioma, a rare slow-growing tumor. Philipps, who didn’t have any obvious symptoms in advance, said that she thought about canceling her scan since it was scheduled one day after her former Dawson’s Creek costar James Van Der Beek died from stage III colorectal cancer. “‘Should I cancel it?’” Philipps recalled asking her ex-husband, Marc Silverstein, who responded, “Maybe it’s the best thing you could do for your friend this morning. Go get that scan.” After the Prenuvo scan confirmed the presence of a tumor, Philipps was admittedly “hyperventilating” while still “trying to breathe.” Immediately, the actress was focused on consoling her two daughters. (Philipps and Silverstein, 55, are the parents of Birdie, 17, and Cricket, 13.) “[Birdie] was kind of beside herself and really, really scared and overwhelmed with emotion,” the Girls5Eva alum recalled of her eldest child. “I just kept saying to her, ‘Birdie, you’re just not in the movie where your mom dies your senior year of high school. That’s just not the movie that you’re in. I promise you.’” As for Cricket, Philipps noted that her youngest daughter was much calmer about her diagnosis. “Her reaction when I told her was like, ‘OK. You’re going to be fine?’ And I was like, ‘I’m totally going to be fine,’” Philipps said. “And she’s like, ‘OK.’” Philipps ultimately underwent a procedure in March, with doctors removing a 2.6-centimeter mass from her brain. “It is considered malignant, but it has the best prognosis of all of the malignant gliomas,” Philipps’ neuro-oncologist, Dr. Alexandra Miller, told People. “It’s sort of defined as a cancerous tumor based on the ability of the tumor to regrow over time, rather than it looking very malignant under the microscope.” Philipps’ procedure was successful, and she told the outlet that she “wasn’t in pain at all.” However, she faced a setback in April when she contracted staphylococcus on her incision and needed a follow-up surgery to debride and clear the wound. While the actress’ surgery was successful, she will need to get regular scans to monitor a potential recurrence. “What am I? The luckiest girl in the world?” she quipped.
