Ben McKenzie's Surprise Role in 'Sheriff Country' Stirs Excitement

Morena Baccarin is reuniting with husband Ben McKenzie — on screen — in season 2 of Sheriff Country. CBS announced on Monday, August 24, that McKenzie, 47, plays Sheriff Wade, a "neighboring sheriff who is called in to assist Mickey." The season 2 premiere will mark the first time the real-life couple will share the screen on the show. McKenzie previously spoke to Us about if he could see a scenario in which he would appear on the Fire Country spinoff, saying coyly in April, "I do." McKenzie said he enjoyed tuning in every week to see Baccarin's police procedural. "She's great. The kids love her show — or at least a couple of them do. We were watching the last two episodes last night," the actor, who shares three kids with Baccarin, shared. "It was a two-parter. It was a Sheriff Country and then a Fire Country [crossover]. And it's just awesome." He continued: "It's interesting because in many ways, it's a show that is similar to other shows, in the sense there's a cop drama, but it's really about the community of Edgewater and the relationships between all these people in this fictional small town." As a viewer, McKenzie was thrilled by the show's success. "There's something about the incredibly strong desire for those communities — and the absence of those — that is really quite charming. I also just love that there's a female lead in a female sheriff," he explained. "This is a part that would always have gone to a man — including myself — in the past. It's fantastic to be able to see her do that. She's crushing it." McKenzie admitted it was "funny" to see how often people now "recognize" Baccarin, 47, over him, adding, "I have to try to remind my kids that at one point I was also famous! They're not impressed by my crypto documentary." The town of Edgewater was originally introduced when Fire Country premiered in 2022 with inmate Bode (Max Thieriot) returning home and volunteering for the California Conservation Camp Program during season 1 of the hit show. By season 2, a backdoor pilot set up the world of Sheriff Country, which is centered around Sharon's (Diane Farr) estranged sister Mickey (Baccarin) as she solves crimes in town. CBS was quick to renew Sheriff Country in December 2025 after its success on the network. According to a press release, Sheriff Country has averaged 7.6 million viewers and is "consistently a time period winner" for Friday nights at 8 P.M. The first season wrapped up in May with a shocking episode that revealed Deputy Director of the DEA — Eva (Rachel Ticotin) — as Mickey's mother who was presumed dead. "We're told in the pilot of season 1 that Mickey's mother is dead and it's quite clear she's dead. She's not part of the picture. One of the writers pitched it to me relatively early in season 1 [that she was secretly alive], and I dismissed it," showrunner Matt Lopez exclusively told Us at the time. "Over the course of the season, more and more writers started to get on board. I was a fairly late convert because I don't want to just turn over a card to turn over a card. If it gives us really good story and reveals something about the characters we care about and it's grounded in real human emotion then I'm interested."

Molly McNearney's Dilemma: Should Jimmy Kimmel Retire?

Jimmy Kimmel’s wife, Molly McNearney, is torn about whether or not she wants him to walk away from his late-night talk show. “It definitely appeals to me for the nervous system of the household,” the TV writer, 48, said during the Monday, August 24, episode of Dax Shepard’s “Armchair Expert” podcast when asked for her thoughts on Kimmel’s potential retirement. McNearney added, “I feel like Jimmy has a fly rod in one hand and a torch in the other right now. It's like he deserves to go out there and just be on the river and relax, but I also want him to keep fighting. And I feel this sense of desire to not quit because I think what he's doing is incredibly important right now. And yes, I know we're doing it in a vacuum, but I think it's giving people a feeling of like, their voice is heard, and I think it's important. But as his wife, I really would like him to be able to not do the show anymore so he could relax.” McNearney, who works on Jimmy Kimmel Live! as cohead writer and the executive producer, said she would be “good either way” when it comes to her own retirement from the talk show. “I would be happy to be done with the show, end it in a great way and do my own next thing. But I do care deeply about that show and the people who work there,” she explained. “And I think the voice is really important right now.” As for Kimmel, 58, the talk show host said he fears he would regret ending the show if he made that decision. “I know people who've been in that situation,” he shared. “It's funny, people make a big show of like, ‘I'm done and I'm tired doing this.’ And then they make a lesser comeback trying to do the same thing. That's always a bummer. And I always look at that and go, ‘Oh, is that going to be me?’” McNearney added that she is looking forward to reading the daily headlines with leisure after sending their kids to school, but she’ll also miss “reading with a purpose” and trying to pull news angles for the talk show. Sean Grayson's Death Raises Questions About Justice After Sonya Massey Case

Sean Grayson, the Illinois police officer convicted of the murder of Sonya Massey, has died six months into his prison sentence. He was 32. The former Sangamon County Sheriff's Office deputy died on Sunday, August 23, at around noon, his attorney, Daniel Fultz, confirmed to NBC News and NPR Illinois. In October 2025, Grayson was convicted of second-degree murder over the fatal shooting of Massey, 36, inside her home in July 2024. Massey, a Black woman, had called 911 to report a suspected prowler. She was shot by Grayson three times. He alleged he feared that she would scald him with a pot of boiling water she had taken off the stove. Grayson was sentenced to 20 years in prison in January. At his sentencing hearing in January, another attorney for Grayson, Mark Wykoff, said that the former officer had been diagnosed with stage 3 colon cancer in 2023 and that the disease had since progressed to stage 4 after spreading to his liver, lungs and rectum, per NBC News. Attorneys for the Massey family said in a statement to NPR Illinois on Sunday, “Sonya Massey’s death was unjustifiable and she should be alive today. Sean Grayson’s death in custody from cancer does not bring Sonya back.” “We wish his family prayers of peace, as we do for all who grieve a loved one. Sonya’s family knows that pain all too well and will grieve her loss the rest of their days,” added attorneys Ben Crump and Antonio Romanucci. In July, the Illinois Prisoner Review Board denied Grayson early release from prison on medical grounds. At the time, attorneys for the Massey family said that the parole board had “made the right decision.” “The board recognized what this family has said from the start,” Crump and Romanucci said in a statement. “No one is above accountability, and a badge does not provide an early way out.” Sangamon County State’s Attorney John Milhiser opposed Grayson’s release in a letter to the three-person parole board. “To release Grayson under these circumstances would be a miscarriage of justice and an insult to Sonya Massey’s memory and family,” wrote Milhiser. In August 2025, Illinois Gov. JB Pritzker signed into law the Sonya Massey Bill, which requires police departments to conduct stricter background checks for new hires. “When Sonya Massey feared for her safety, she did what anyone would do — she called law enforcement for help. Communities should be able to trust that when they call the police to their home, the responding officer will be well-trained and without a history of bias or misconduct,” Pritzker said in a statement at the time. “Today, I sign Sonya Massey’s Bill to help prevent these tragedies, to better equip law enforcement to keep our communities safe, and to continue working to build a justice system that protects all of our citizens.”

Mommy changed her mind. Good for you lol,” praised a supporter. “Wish more women were like this. It’s called intelligence,” another cheered. “Let’s actually normalize this,” begged an advocate. Online protesters, however, slammed the woman’s controversial communiqué, deeming the content “Sick AF” and “disturbingly vile.”The controversial Instagram post has garnered over 121,000 likes. New details regarding Hayden Panettiere and Brian Hickerson’s toxic on-again, off-again relationship are being revealed following the actress’ sudden and tragic death at 36. Panettiere’s estranged mother, Lesley Vogel, claimed to The New York Times on Sunday, August 23, that Hickerson, 37, had once pawned “some of” the Nashville alum’s belongings, including a vintage guitar, at an undisclosed time prior to her death. Vogel further alleged that Panettiere was ultimately “shocked” to find more of her possessions in Hickerson’s storage unit. A second individual, speaking to The Times anonymously, corroborated Vogel’s accusations that Hickerson previously sold a handful of Panettiere’s belongings. Hickerson has not publicly addressed the accusations. Us reached out for comment regarding claims he pawned her property. Panettiere and Hickerson dated on and off from 2018 to 2020, ultimately breaking up following a domestic violence incident in Wyoming. Hickerson was ultimately sentenced to one year in jail in connection to the incident, which a judge later suspended in exchange for one year of probation. In May, Panettiere began a book tour to celebrate the release of her This Is Me: A Reckoning memoir. According to two unidentified sources with knowledge of the matter who spoke to The Times, a Barnes & Noble store in New York City was given strict instructions not to allow Hickerson into the venue. Per the outlet’s insiders, Panettiere was accompanied by private security with the alleged intent to keep Hickerson away from her. “I really thought I had done it and I was capable of doing it by myself,” she said of her relationship with Hickerson on the “On Purpose” podcast weeks earlier, months before her suspected overdose death. “I needed an incredible amount of support and backup in order to make sure that there was no way for him to find his way back in.” Hickerson, through an attorney, broke his silence on Panettiere’s death on Thursday, August 20. “Hayden’s death remains under investigation and it is important to allow that investigation to proceed,” Hickerson’s attorney Sloan Ellis told Us in a statement. “As has been publicly reported, police confirmed there were no signs of foul play. Out of respect for Hayden’s loved ones and the ongoing investigation, there will be no further comment at this time.” Panettiere was found dead in South Carolina on August 16, with a local police report claiming that Hickerson was present at the scene with his brother, Zach. Narcan was reportedly used and life-saving measures, including CPR, were made but were ultimately unsuccessful. “After EMS officially declared Hayden deceased, I escorted Zach [Hickerson] and Brian out of the apartment,” a police report obtained by Us read, referring to Brian’s brother. “I observed Zach to be very emotional while EMS were working on Hayden. Brian did not become emotional until EMS declared her officially deceased.” A cause of death has not yet been revealed at the time of publication. In the wake of Panettiere’s death, Zach — who once dated the Ice Princess actress — claimed he and his brother tried to save the Heroes star’s life. “When we went in and tried to wake Hayden up for lunch, we realized she was unconscious,” he claimed to TMZ on Friday, August 21. “I immediately called 911, and Brian gave her Narcan. We then jointly performed CPR while 911 was on speaker until Fire and EMS arrived.
