Shocking Tragedy: 'Marvelous Mrs. Maisel' Set Designer's Death Unfolds

An unimaginable tragedy took place when a man stabbed his wife to death in their New York City apartment and left their baby alone with her body before he went to a nearby park and died by suicide. Mary Kate Golding, who worked as a set designer on The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel and Gossebumps, was found dead with a knife in her back in her family's basement apartment in Astoria just after midnight on Tuesday, July 21, the New York Police Department confirmed to Us. Golding’s husband, Joseph Azzaretto, was found dead about six hours later in Astoria Park. Law enforcement sources told the New York Post that Azzaretto, 33, reportedly left the couple's 11-month-old son with Golding’s body before he headed to the park. The boy was found after Azzaretto allegedly called one of Golding’s friends to confess that he killed her. A neighbor told the outlet that they heard the friend “screaming” after she discovered Golding's body. The friend then “took the baby and walked out” of the apartment. The baby is now in the care of Golding's parents, who arrived at the scene later. The deaths have not formally been classified as a murder-suicide, according to the outlet. However, investigators believe Azzaretto killed Golding after they got into an argument. Neighbors told the outlet that Azzaretto had been known to lose his temper. “He was an angry person,” one neighbor said. “I decided to avoid him. I didn't even look at his text messages.” The New York City Police Department confirmed to Us that no arrests have been made in connection to the deaths. Azzaretto's family experienced another violent tragedy in the past after his younger brother, Nicholas Azzaretto, shot and killed their father, Frank Nicholas Azzaretto, in February 2020, according to WFMZ. Nicholas, who was 20 years old at the time, killed Frank, 58, in the family’s Monroe County, Pennsylvania, home during a domestic dispute. Frank and his wife, Patricia, were fighting over a phone bill when the patriarch became violent. Patricia testified in court that Frank started to throw plants and pictures before he pushed her around, according to the Pocono Record. Nicholas went upstairs from the basement after he heard fighting and found Frank being physical with his mother. After Frank told Nicholas to go back to the basement and closed the door on him, Nicholas returned with a shotgun and shot his father in the shoulder. Pellets entered Frank's chest and he was taken to a hospital for treatment, where he was later pronounced dead. During the court proceedings, the defense said that there was a history of abuse in the family and that Frank had an “apparent abuse streak in his personality.” Nicholas eventually pleaded guilty to third-degree murder and voluntary manslaughter, and he avoided prison time by being ordered to undergo a decade of monitoring, supervision and specialized treatment. Katie Holmes stepped out for a cozy date night with new man Jason Bard Yarmosky in New York City. Holmes, 47, was photographed out and about on Tuesday, July 21, wearing a pink corset-style top, black leather pants and matching heels as she held hands with Yarmosky, 38, who sported a casual white tee, jeans and black shoes. The twosome were seen leaving Sienna Spiro’s private performance, which was part of NYC’s Soho Sessions concert series. Nolan Wells' Missing Throat Raises New Questions About His Tragic Death

Jason Alexander is issuing a public apology to Courtney Stodden after she slammed the actor for their Funny or Die comedy sketch in which he rubbed a phone on her breasts when she was a minor. "Looking back at the comedy sketch in which Ms. Stodden and I participated in 2012, I completely agree that it was inappropriate and I truly regret it,” the Seinfeld actor, 66, said in a statement to Us. “But more importantly, I am deeply sorry for any harm or distress it has caused Ms. Stodden. I offer her my sincerest apologies." Stodden, 31, publicly called out Alexander via Instagram on Monday, July 20, while looking back at the comedy sketch, which parodied daytime television and featured Alexander using a cell phone to “assess the quality” of Stodden’s heart. “I was 17 years old in this photo,” she wrote alongside a screenshot from the skit. “The older I get, the more impossible this is to understand. During this comedy sketch, Jason Alexander repeatedly rubbed his phone across my breasts while saying there was ‘no signal’ in my head but ‘plenty of signal’ in my chest. Later in the sketch, he joked that when I turned 18 he’d like to take me behind the couch and ‘have his way’ with me.” Stodden also noted that Alexander is credited as a writer of the episode. “As an adult, that fact has become harder — not easier — for me to understand. I was a minor. I didn’t have the legal power to decide whether I wanted to participate. The contracts were signed by adults,” she wrote, adding that her paycheck went to her then-husband, Doug Hutchison, who was 50 when he married a 16-year-old Stodden in 2011. The pair later split in 2017. “I was the only child in the room,” Stodden recalled of the sketch. “I felt so alone. Looking back now, I don’t see comedy. I see a 17-year-old girl whose body became part of an adult joke.” She concluded, “People still say, ‘You chose to be there.’ Legally, I couldn’t make those decisions for myself. That’s the point. I can’t change what happened to me, but I can ask myself: How did so many adults look at a minor and decide this was acceptable? That’s exactly why I speak out today. Children deserve laws that protect them. They shouldn’t have to become adults before realizing the law should have protected them all along.” Stodden has campaigned against child marriage since her divorce from Hutchison. In addition to publicly speaking out against her ex on several occasions, Stodden has taken aim at others who allegedly exploited her in her youth. Last month, she slammed television personality Dr. Drew Pinsky, claiming that he forced her to undergo an exam of her breasts on live television when she was a minor. “Dr. Drew had me on his show when I was 16 and had me undergo an ultrasound to see if my breasts were real or if I was lying about my breasts,” she wrote via Instagram. “I wasn’t an underage girl. I was a minor trapped in a situation that I wasn’t able to get out of legally. I had no rights at the time. The money he paid me to be on the show went straight to my abuser.” Dr. Drew has not publicly responded to the allegations. COURTESY OF NETFLIXThe threatening emails from “Lilith” In May 2016, after Ian and Angela tied the knot, he told his friend Leslie that the couple had allegedly been receiving emails from an anonymous account with the user name “Lilithistruth,” aka “Lilith.” The messages had a “biblical undertone,” Leslie noted onscreen in the doc, adding that they were “super threatening.”Some of the alleged messages read, “You must be gone” and “You have stolen my treasured home.” Ian’s friend Leslie (pictured above in the documentary) described the alleged emails as “super threatening,” and said the couple quickly assumed they were from Hadley. NetflixAnother email shown onscreen read, “An eye for an eye, you are finished.” The messages escalated to threatening Angela’s allegedly unborn child.They also featured disturbing images such as “decapitated people” and “aborted fetuses,” according to “A Toxic Love Story.” The Netflix doc goes into detail about how Michelle (pictured) was falsely accused by the couple of sending threatening online messages. NetflixThe dispute over a condo Ian and Michelle dated from 2013 to 2015, before he began his relationship with Angela in 2016. The married couple was living in a condo that Ian had originally bought with Michelle. Leslie claimed in the doc that she and Ian “were both thinking the same thing,” which was, “Holy s–t, it’s Michelle sending the emails,” amid Ian’s dispute with his ex over the condo. Reporting Michelle to the police seemed “necessary,” Leslie said onscreen in the doc.Michelle (pictured) was arrested after Ian and Angela falsely accused her of luring a man to rape the latter. NetflixThe Craigslist “rape fantasy” ad Michelle was arrested in June 2016, after Ian and Angela falsely told police that Michelle posed as Angela and responded to a Craigslist ad from a man soliciting a “rape fantasy” encounter. They accused Michelle of trying to lure him to “show up at the condo, to rape Angela,” Leslie claimed. Rick, the man who posted the ad, appeared in the doc anonymously and said onscreen that he received a message from the email address “Lilithistruth,” in response to his ad.The “Lilith” email account sent him photos of Angela, and gave him Ian and Angela’s address. He noted that “Lilith” told him to “just show up” for a tryst with the woman in the photos, and that she would leave her door open for him. However, after seeing the name Ian Diaz on the door, he got cold feet and left, because he didn’t want to enter a “situation where the boyfriend or husband doesn’t know,” he said. NetflixMichelle gave odd answers when police questioned herDuring Michelle’s interviews with police after she was taken into custody, Michelle was shown one of the “Lilith” emails from September 2015 that said, “God’s law is above all law, including the law of man, Lilith.” At the time, Michelle seemingly confessed to writing the emails. “Yeah, that was me. I don’t even understand where it came from, or why I wrote it,” she said in interview footage that was shown onscreen.She added that it felt like an “alternate persona,” and she thought, “I really am losing my mind.” Angela (pictured) allegedly faked having cancer years before her involvement with Ian. NetflixYears before Angela’s relationship with Ian, she allegedly faked having cancer In 2013, Angela was dating a man named Jason Rayburn. “One night, she divulged that she had cervical cancer, Stage 4,” Jason claimed onscreen in the doc, noting that Angela allegedly blew him off every time he asked to accompany her to chemo appointments. Angela’s former friend Mary Bukovskis also spoke in the documentary. She claimed that after meeting Angela in 2014, she began noticing discrepancies in her story about her alleged cancer battle.Angela (pictured) allegedly faked getting chemo treatments for cancer. However, she allegedly observed her tucking her hair into the hat at times.“This b—h has more hair than I do!” she exclaimed while recounting the story.In the doc, Mary also revealed that she called the facility where Angela claimed she was getting treatment at one point — and discovered that she wasn’t even a patient there. Angela’s ex-boyfriend Jason Rayburn (pictured above in the doc) also called out his ex for faking a cancer diagnosis. NetflixJason also quickly caught on, he revealed in the doc.After Angela allegedly texted him a photo from a “first person perspective” that supposedly showed her view from sitting in a chair while receiving chemo treatments, he later found it on Google Images. Both Jason and Mary then confronted Angela in 2014. According to Jason’s video camera footage shown onscreen, Angela doubled down and refused to admit she was lying to them.Additionally, in police audio played onscreen from 2016, cops later asked Angela if she’d ever gotten chemo, to which she replied, “No, absolutely not.”Angela (pictured) allegedly faked her positive pregnancy tests and used a fake sonogram. NetflixAngela allegedly faked her pregnancy After Michelle’s arrest, Ian called his friend Leslie to inform her that he had found out the sonogram from Angela’s pregnancy was fake, Leslie recalled onscreen in the doc.Upon searching the condo, Leslie and Ian found pregnancy tests that Angela had drawn on with “blue markers” to make them look positive. Angela (pictured) also allegedly faked her pregnancy. NetflixLearning about her deception caused Leslie to wonder, “Holy s–t, did any of these emails actually come from Michelle? Is it possible that Angela sent all of these emails to herself?” she recalled onscreen.She felt an “immense responsibility” to tell the police that there were some “doubts,” she added. Angela (pictured) was arrested in 2017 and pleaded guilty to all charges, including fraud, false imprisonment and falsely reporting a crime. Michelle described her relationship with Ian as a “daily roller coaster ride” After Angela’s arrest and Michelle’s exoneration, Department of Justice investigator Jason Higley and his team “had an obligation to look at the case again,” he said onscreen in the doc. During their interviews with Michelle, she divulged that after she and Ian bought the condo together – and she put all her savings in it – Ian’s behavior allegedly turned controlling.“He’ll pick out outfits for me, and tell me when he wants me to wear them,” she said onscreen in the doc.Michelle (pictured) said her relationship with Ian was a “daily roller coaster.” NetflixIan also installed security cameras, she claimed, but not outside the condo — they were “inside, facing the kitchen, where I cook.”Michelle described being with Ian as a “daily roller coaster ride” in the doc.“One minute, he’d be taking me to a fancy dinner and telling me how beautiful I was,” she recalled, “and the next minute, he’d be flirting with another girl and screaming in my face.” After she left him, Michelle claimed his “end game” was to find a way to figure out “how to keep the condo, and destroy [her] life at the same time.” Ian (pictured) allegedly pressured Michelle into participating in a cuckold fantasy. However, she claimed Ian would bring” it up “over and over, multiple times a week” and that he even sent her profiles of men on Craigslist that he wanted her to sleep with.Ian (pictured) allegedly pressured Michelle to sleep with another man. NetflixIt made her so “uncomfortable” that she “would cry,” she recalled. A doctor later told her that she was experiencing a “dissociative episode” — due to “complex PTSD” from her relationship with Ian.“I only ever sent these [first two] emails, but I was framed for all this horrible cyberstalking,” said Michelle.Angela (pictured) helped Ian frame Michelle for cyberstalking. COURTESY OF NETFLIX“Michelle’s story did sound crazy,” investigator Higley recalled in the doc. “She effectively had a nervous breakdown.”However, after fully interviewing Michelle, Higley and his team started to find Angela suspicious.But upon further investigation, they speculated that “Angela might have only been a passenger, and this was Ian’s scheme.”He added that investigators suspected that Ian “seized on those [first emails] to create the ‘Lilith’ [email] account and language.” Investigators went back over the case and found proof that Ian was behind the “Lilith” emails. COURTESY OF NETFLIXInvestigators found proof on Ian’s computer“Ian tried to cover his tracks, but in digital forensics, there’s always another place to look for evidence,” Higley explained onscreen in the doc.Investigators eventually found evidence on a laptop “that Ian Diaz is Lilith.”Michelle said she eventually found her “fairytale ending” raising a daughter, while Ian is currently serving 10 years in prison for his crimes. NetflixWhere are they now? After serving her sentence, Angela “moved away from California” and declined to participate in the documentary, per text that appeared onscreen in the doc.Meanwhile, Ian was dismissed by the US Marshal service in 2023. After pleading not guilty to all charges, he was convicted of stalking, perjury and obstruction of justice. He’s currently serving a 10 year federal prison sentence in Texas.For Michelle’s part, she sued the Anaheim police department after spending 88 days in prison. She was awarded damages for an undisclosed sum in 2021.Flash forward to present day, she began dating again and gave birth to a daughter — on the same day that Ian was convicted. “Raising this beautiful little girl is my fairytale ending,” she said in the doc. “A Toxic Love Story” is now streaming on Netflix.
