Florida Execution: The Unsettling Story Behind James Robertson's Death Row Choice New

Florida Execution: The Unsettling Story Behind James Robertson's Death Row Choice

See more of our coverage in your search results. STARKE, Fla. — A Florida prisoner who said he killed his cellmate specifically to get on death row was executed Tuesday, nearly 18 years after the attack.James Robertson, 63, declined to offer any last words before receiving a three-drug injection and was pronounced dead about 10 minutes later. It was a stark contrast to the failed execution of Christa Pike in Tennessee two weeks ago, where she was rushed to the hospital after surviving two lethal doses of pentobarbital.Robertson’s execution, the first in Florida since Pike, comes at a time of escalating attention on the death penalty in the United States. The Pentagon said last week that it would livestream the firing squad execution of Fort Hood shooter Nidal Malik Hasan, drawing criticism from both Republican and Democratic lawmakers.Florida inmate James Robertson was executed on Oct. 13, 2026. Florida Department of Corrections“Florida has a sound lethal injection process and protocol,” Jordan Kirkland, a state Department of Corrections spokesperson, said at a news conference before the execution. Although he couldn’t speak to Tennessee’s lethal injection procedure, he said Florida would make sure its process was “humane and dignified.”Florida executes people by injecting them with a sedative, a paralytic, and a drug that stops the heart, according to the Department of Corrections.Robertson wanted to be executedRobertson had pleaded guilty to first-degree murder for strangling Frank Hart while he slept in 2008, and waived all appeals. He told investigators that he did it so he wouldn’t have to live out his days in prison.Hart was killed just eight days before he was due to be released, his daughter, Rebecca Hart, told reporters at Florida State Prison. She stressed that her father was not just a piece of Robertson’s story.Robertson pleaded guilty to first-degree murder for killing his cellmate, Frank Hart, in 2008. Netflix“When someone you love is taken from you in such a violent way, the world keeps moving, even when a part of yours feels like it has stopped,” she read. “Other people go on with their lives, but you carry your loss into every tomorrow.”Robertson was 17 years old when he went to prison in 1980 for burglary and assault. Years of convictions for escape, battery and weapons while in prison kept adding time to his total sentence. Hart had been sent to prison in 2003 following a sexual battery conviction.A rare reprieve leaves another Florida prisoner on death rowRobertson was supposed to be one of two executions carried out by Florida on Tuesday, but Gov. Ron DeSantis withdrew a death warrant last week for William Lee Thompson. The Republican governor did not provide a reason but had temporarily stayed the execution last month pending a psychiatric evaluation.Records show this was the first time DeSantis withdrew a death warrant. Thompson, 74, will remain on death row, and a new death warrant could be signed in the future. His attorneys say he has dementia and failing health, and they want him transferred to a medical facility.DeSantis is the third Florida governor to sign a death warrant for Thompson. Bob Graham and Bob Martinez both scheduled executions for Thompson in the 1980s, but years of appeals and stays allowed him to avoid the electric chair, the state’s method of execution at the time.Thompson was convicted of first-degree murder, kidnapping and sexual battery in the 1976 killing of 23-year-old Sally Ivester.Florida has the nation’s busiest death chamberDeSantis oversaw 19 executions in 2025, more than any other Florida governor in a single year since the death penalty was reinstated in 1976. Robertson was the state’s 17th execution of 2026, with two more already scheduled, not counting Thompson.Law enforcement vehicles sit parked outside the Florida state prison in Starke, Fla. on July 28, 2026. AP Photo/David FischerDeSantis, who leaves office in January, has made few public comments about the unprecedented number of executions but explained previously that his goal is to bring justice to victims’ families who have waited decades for the death sentences to be carried out.William Reaves, 77, is scheduled to be executed on Oct. 20, followed by Jesse Guardado, 64, on Nov. 5. Reaves was convicted of fatally shooting a deputy after dropping a gun in front of the law enforcement officer in 1986. Guardado was convicted of robbing and killing a woman in order to buy drugs in 2004.A total of 47 people were executed in the US in 2025. Besides leading all other states last year, Florida has carried out more than half the 31 total executions in the US so far this year. In July, Florida executed two prisoners in one day, the first state in nearly a decade to do so.

Amelia Earhart's Plane: Could Giant Crabs Hold the Key? New

Amelia Earhart's Plane: Could Giant Crabs Hold the Key?

See more of our coverage in your search results. The mystery of Amelia Earhart’s long-lost aircraft may finally be solved — as researchers believe searchers spent nearly nine decades looking in the wrong place. A 17-member team from Purdue University and the Archaeological Legacy Institute (ALI) has launched a high-stakes expedition to Nikumaroro, a remote South Pacific atoll overrun by massive, three-foot land crabs. The coconut crab is the largest crustacean that spends all its adult life on land, and has been spotted mounting attacks in the night and grabbing unsuspecting prey that pass too close to the crabs’ burrows.Researchers suspect Earhart and her navigator Fred Noonan miscalculated their course on July 2, 1937, landing on Nikumaroro instead of Howland Island, 350 miles to the north, where they attempted to land. A satellite image shows the Taraia Object in a lagoon on Nikumaroro Island, suspected to be Amelia Earhart’s plane. Archaeological Legacy InstituteThe Purdue expedition arrived on the island’s western edge on Oct. 12 and the team is using a floating hydraulic dredge to clear underwater sediment and uncover the unidentified object. The team is focusing on the “Taraia Object” – a submerged shape detected near the shoreline in satellite imagery that researchers think could be the remains of the Lockheed Electra 10E’s tail and fuselage.ALI and Purdue report that the object was identified in satellite data in 2020, though historical photographs suggest it has rested in the lagoon since 1938. The team aims to confirm aluminum skin and rivet patterns to positively identify the plane. The voyage marks the 20th organized search for Earhart’s plane, since she reported running low on fuel to the U.S. Coast Guard before radio contact was lost. Previous attempts were misled by natural underwater rock formations, but researchers believe post-landing radio distress signals and artifacts found point directly to Nikumaroro.Prior discoveries on the island include human bones found in 1940 –  later analyzed in 2018 as consistent with a woman of Earhart’s build — along with 1930s-era remnants of a woman’s shoe and a freckle cream jar. Theory holds that the pair briefly survived as castaways before the aircraft was swept into deeper water. Amelia Earhart flew and promoted the Stearman-Hammond Y-1 (often called the Hammond Y monoplane) in 1936. HUM Images/Universal Images Group via Getty ImagesThe island’s native Coconut crabs, known for their powerful claws and bone-scavenging habits, have fueled grim speculation that the aviators’ remains were dispersed shortly after their deaths. To ensure safety, Purdue and ALI researchers sleep aboard their vessel each night. If the team locates the Electra during this five-day operational window, they will map the site and return next year for full recovery. Purdue University is currently negotiating with the nation of Kiribati, which comprises 33 islands including Phoenix Islands, to bring the wreckage back to the United States.Earhart served as a career counselor for women at Purdue and advisor to its Department of Aeronautics in 1935 prior to her historic attempt to circumnavigate the globe. Before this, she was the first person to fly a solo, nonstop flight across the United States (1932) and the first woman/second person to fly nonstop alone across the Atlantic.

Victoria's Secret Angel Romee Strijd's Emotional Response to Show Rejection New

Victoria's Secret Angel Romee Strijd's Emotional Response to Show Rejection

Victoria’s Secret Angel Romee Strijd got candid about not being selected to walk in the 2026 fashion show. “I just hung up the phone [and] it’s a no, which is fine because rejection is part of modeling and that’s totally fine,” Strijd, 31, shared via TikTok on Monday, October 12, just days before the 2026 fashion show is set to take place on Sunday, October 18. She went on to say that while the casting team thought she looked “great,” they didn't think she would “fit in the show this year.” Strijd continued while wiping a tear from her eye, “I was like, ‘What was the reason? I would love to have an explanation.’” Her agency told her that the casting team “wasn't there yet” and that she had “been released,” which she said was news to her. The supermodel shared that she felt “left in the dark” on the matter and that she doesn't think she’s “gonna cast anymore in the future” because it left a bad taste in her mouth. “I don't like the way I was treated,” she said, noting that she wants to keep “the positive memories” from years past. In a separate TikTok on Monday, Strijd explained that she went to a casting call in September and “trained for it this summer.” “I wanted to do the show again even after kids. It felt like the right timing,” she said. (Strijd shares daughters Mint, 5, and June 3, with her fiancé, Laurens van Leeuwen. The couple has been engaged since 2022.) https://www.tiktok.com/@romeestrijd/video/7695781437244591374?lang=en “I knew the casting director already. I went and I thought I was gonna know soon after if I was gonna do the show or not, but I didn't hear anything for weeks,” she added. “I think I was on some sort of ‘maybe list.’ It’s Monday now, the show is on Sunday, and I still haven't heard anything.” Strijd continued to ask her agency for updates, but they told her she was still on the “maybe” list. “It's been a little bit of a roller-coaster mentally for me, since I have to continue training, but I’m not sure if I’m gonna do it.” “I wish I had a little bit more clearance,” she continued. “I think it’s gonna be a no but I also keep training because you never know — in fashion and modeling it’s all very last minute.” Strijd walked in every Victoria’s Fashion Show from 2014 though 2018. With this year’s catwalk event just days away, fans have been sounding off about the castings. “Influencers doing the show but not the OG angels????? Insanity,” one social media user commented on Strijd’s video, while another wrote, “Honestly... if you don't walk and they use influencers and nepo babies thats a [sic] absolute joke!!!”

Florida Man Allegedly Attacks Shopper Over 1960s Grudge New

Florida Man Allegedly Attacks Shopper Over 1960s Grudge

A Florida man was arrested after he allegedly slashed a 70-year-old man across the face with a box cutter as she shopped at Publix because he “disliked” people born in the 1960s, authorities claim. Ramsey Thomas Lyons was arrested on Saturday, October 10, and charged with aggravated battery on a person 65 years or older. The alleged incident took place when Lyons, 47, came into contact with the 70-year-old man while he was shopping in an aisle at the grocery store. The victim "suddenly felt as if someone had punched him in the left side of his face,” according to a probable cause arrest affidavit viewed by Law & Crime. Police said that he then turned around and saw Lyons staring at him while holding a box cutter. The victim realized he had been stabbed when he saw blood on his hands and he ran for help, according to the affidavit. Officers with the Punta Gorda Police Department then arrived at the scene, and they found Lyons standing near the store entrance with his hands on his head. Lyons was taken into custody and officers recovered a box cutter at the scene. Lyons then spoke to authorities and told them that he had an "undiagnosed mental illness" and had a "dislike for the 1960's era,” per the affidavit. The defendant added that he allegedly entered the store "with the intent to murder someone" and he saw the victim soon after. Lyons also said that he allegedly attacked the man because he "looked like he was from the 1960's.” "I just pulled it out of my pocket and stuck it in his neck," Lyons allegedly said before adding that he had been thinking of attacking someone in the two days leading up to the attack. Following the attack, he said that he dropped the box cutter so the police "wouldn't be scared" and, as a result, shoot or Taser him. Additionally, Lyons told authorities that he did not know the victim and randomly picked him out. Police said that the victim suffered a gash to his face, which started on his left cheek near his mouth. The cut continued down on his jawline to his neck. Authorities added that the victims needed "numerous stitches,” but appeared to be in stable condition. After Lyons was arrested, he was taken to Charlotte County Jail and is currently being held without bond. He is next scheduled to appear in court on November 16. It is not currently clear if Lyons has entered a plea or retained legal counsel following his arrest. The Punta Gorda Police Department had no additional information to share when contacted by Us about the case.

Why Donald Trump's Marijuana Rescheduling Plan Just Hit a Roadblock New

Why Donald Trump's Marijuana Rescheduling Plan Just Hit a Roadblock

","amp":null,"link":"https://www.viously.com/vt-co/sN-KZniq07s","iframe":null,"oembed":"https://www.viously.com/oembed?url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.viously.com%2Fvt-co%2FsN-KZniq07s"}" data-thumbnail-url="https://cdn.viously.com/video/sN-KZniq07s/1-w960.webp" data-video-url="https://dltj72yijj96u.cloudfront.net/videos/ssstwitter.com_1791825246849_AihF6k.mp4"> There has been an unexpected development in President Donald Trump 's plan to reclassify marijuana. Under current plans, the Trump administration would re-classify marijuana from a Schedule I drug to a Schedule III drug. However, those hoping that the plans (which would mean it is looked on by law as a less dangerous drug than it currently is) would be put into action soon might not be happy with the latest development. Work to reclassify marijuana has been ongoing since 2024, but the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) has just announced the rescheduling has, as of right now, been paused. Why has the rescheduling of marijuana been paused? The DEA has announced that the planned re-scheduling of marijuana has been paused so they could consider a new report on drug scheduling issued by the Government Accountability Office (GAO). In a new report, the DEA says that this report would need to be added to the hearing record and briefings because it would concern rescheduling all products containing marijuana, not just those approved by the FDA. All federal agencies have until October 13 to respond to this request. After this, the presiding judge in the case will consider whether to admit the GAO report into its findings. If it is admitted, then a much wider array of products containing marijuana will then be rescheduled, so the wait for many could be worth it. Currently, forty states and the capitol city Washington D.C have legalized the use of medical marijuana, while a further twenty-four states and Washington D.C have legalized the recreational use of marijuana for adults. But what does this rescheduling actually mean? Some groups want marijuana completely legalized. Credit: Catherine Falls Commercial / Getty Images What would the rescheduling of marijuana in the US mean? In layman's terms, the rescheduling of marijuana from Schedule I to a Schedule III drug wouldn't fully legalize the recreational use of cannabis at federal level, but it would acknowledge its medical usage and lower the restrictions on the drug federally. This would mean that the government would officially acknowledge the medicinal benefits of using marijuana and that it has a lower propensity for abuse than other Schedule I drugs, like heroin or LSD. Tax burdens for cannabis businesses would also be lessened, since they would finally be able to deduct normal business expenses and it could, theoretically, start being prescribed to patients via FDA-approved pathways. Currently, marijuana is classed as a Schedule I drug, which means at a federal level, it is looked at as a drug with no accepted medical use and a high propensity for abuse. As a Schedule III drug, it would be deemed to be acceptable for medical use and a moderate to low potential for physical and psychological dependence, such as some pain medications, ketamine, and anabolic steroids. Reading Rainbow's Mychal Threets Opens Up About His Emotional Struggle New

Reading Rainbow's Mychal Threets Opens Up About His Emotional Struggle

Reading Rainbow host Mychal Threets is sharing an update on his mental health, admitting he believes he is “running out of time.” “People keep on saying, ‘Michael, I'm glad to see you're doing well. I'm glad to see you're OK.’ But I'm not doing well. I'm not OK. But I believe that's OK, because I'm trying my best,” the TikTok-famous librarian said in an Instagram video on Saturday, October 10, to mark World Mental Health Day. Threets, 36, continued, “My brain is very loud. My feelings are very big. I believe I am running out of time. I don't know how much time I have left. But I'm going to keep on trying to find joy each and every day. No matter what happens, I believe joy is out there for me. Joy is there for you. I am going to pursue joy relentlessly with all the time I have left. I don't know what tomorrow has in store; I haven't met tomorrow yet, but I have hope.” “I want to see you at the library, at the bookstore, in the world where we all belong,” he went on. “I want to stay. I'm trying to stay. I am asking for help. I am asking for joy. I am seizing hope I'm on a journey to OK, to keep on to tomorrow, each and every day. I'm trying to stay, and I'm thankful for you. Thank you for trying. Thank you for staying. We're still here.” In August, Threets sparked concern with a cryptic Threads post announcing that he was seeking medical treatment. “I am not okay. Maybe I’ll never be okay. I’m seeking help. Going to the hopital [sic] tomorrow. In this moment I am safe. By God’s grace,” he wrote at the time. “No matter what happens to me I will always be thankful for the extraordinary people in my life who worry, who help me. Thank you for your care. I will always love you. ” Later that month, Threets updated his fans and followers on his well-being, revealing that he had completed a psychiatric hold for his mental health. “I just wanted to apologize for worrying so many people,” Threets said in a video shared via Threads on August 22. “I just got back from a five-day stay at the hospital, a five-day psychiatric hold. I haven’t been OK for what feels like a very, very long time. I am not OK. But I have hope that I will get to OK.” He continued, “I’m on the struggle bookmobile. It’s gonna take a long time for me to be OK. It’s going to take a long time, but I just wanted to say ‘thank you’ to the multitude of doctors, nurses and mental health workers I saw — it’s not enough, but thank you, you saved my life.” Threets has hosted Reading Rainbow since it relaunched on YouTube in October 2025. The popular children’s program initially aired on PBS from 1983 to 2006 and was hosted by LeVar Burton. If you or someone you know is struggling or in crisis, help is available. Standing out to recruiters in today’s competitive job market is no easy feat, but one job seeker has taken an ultra-unconventional route to ensure their application gets noticed. An image of a half-printed resume featuring a cheeky pitch line has gone viral on Reddit, leaving internet users equal parts amused and thoroughly divided over whether it’s a stroke of personal branding genius or a total disaster. The top half of the document appears like a fairly standard CV, featuring a partial headshot alongside a career objective outlining a desire “to be part of your company wherein I can enhance my skills and gain more knowledge.” It’s the epitome of Gen Z thinking. However, instead of listing the usual work experience, education, and contact details, the page abruptly stops halfway down. Kate Middleton and Princess Charlotte's Surprising Tube Ride Sparks Buzz New

Kate Middleton and Princess Charlotte's Surprising Tube Ride Sparks Buzz

Princess Kate Middleton and her daughter, Princess Charlotte, hopped aboard London’s Underground for a rare outing. Kate, 44, and Charlotte, 11, were seen mingling with commuters while riding the Elizabeth Line, which travels from Greater London to parts of Buckinghamshire, Essex and Hertfordshire. “They spoke to members of the public sitting across from them,” a source told Hello! after riders spotted the duo during a public transit adventure on Saturday, October 10. “They had security with them. The security didn't make it obvious they were there and they tried to make it as 'normal' as possible.” “Catherine had her phone with her and was looking at her phone for a couple of minutes. They seemed very relaxed and were chatting together, smiling,” added the eyewitness. “It was a brief interaction with people opposite them, but they seemed very happy.” The Princess of Wales, who wore a burgundy midi dress with matching heels, held her mini-me’s hand while exiting at the Tottenham Court Road stop. Kate used to ride the tube in the years before she wed husband Prince William, but it was an unexpected appearance for Charlotte. The young royal seemed almost “amazed” as she looked around the carriage, according to a source who saw her on the newest tube line, which opened during the late Queen Elizabeth II's Platinum Jubilee year in May 2022. As previously reported, William, 44, and Kate couldn’t be more proud of the young girl they are raising. Royal expert Sharon Carpenter told Us in April 2025, “They’ve watched Charlotte grow into a smart, confident and funny girl who knows how to hold her own both in the spotlight and outside of it.” Royal insiders said that Charlotte is well-rounded. Not only is she sporty and outdoorsy, but also fashionable and girly. “She’s following closely in her mother’s footsteps when it comes to her princess style, and she’s now regarded as a major child fashion icon,” noted Carpenter. “Charlotte has a sassy sense of humor, just like her dad.” (In addition to Charlotte, William and Kate share sons Prince George, 13, and Prince Louis, 8.) “She really enjoys helping her mother out in the kitchen and will likely be quite the chef when she gets older,” said Carpenter, who shared that William and Kate “are teaching their kids to be responsible.” Plus, Charlotte and her brothers are “encouraged to play outside or get creative.”

RJ Mitte's Tragic Passing: The Untold Story Behind the 'Breaking Bad' Star

RJ Mitte's Tragic Passing: The Untold Story Behind the 'Breaking Bad' Star

Actor RJ Mitte, known for his role as Walter “Flynn” White Jr. on AMC’s Breaking Bad, has died. He was 34. “It is with profound sadness that we share the tragic passing of beloved actor, philanthropist, and passionate disability rights advocate RJ Mitte,” his rep said in a statement to Us on Monday, October 12. (TMZ was first to report the news.) Recalling his role on Breaking Bad, the statement continued, “Drawing from his own experience living with cerebral palsy, Mitte brought authenticity to the role and built a platform on disability awareness and inclusion.” Mitte was diagnosed with a mild form of cerebral palsy (CP), a group of neurological disorders that affect a person's ability to move, maintain balance and control posture, when he was 3 years old. “Beyond entertaining friends and family around the world, he served as an ambassador for United Cerebral Palsy and Shriners Children’s,” his rep added in his Monday statement. “He also served as president of The Mitte Foundation, supporting philanthropic efforts and community initiatives, while using his platform to challenge stereotypes and promote greater representation for people with disabilities.” The statement concluded, “At this time, we ask people to respect the privacy of RJ Mitte’s family and close ones." A county official told TMZ that Mitte died on Monday in Texas. An investigation into his death is ongoing, according to the report. Mitte starred in 56 episodes of Breaking Bad from 2008 to 2013. His character suffered from a more severe case of CP. "My disability has given me so many things that people will never understand unless you have it," he said in a 2014 interview. "Unless you've been through the physical therapy, unless you've been (through) the sweat, the tears, the family problems, the family struggles, but wondering how you're going to get that HMO, wondering how you're going to get those medical bills. You develop a different mentality and you develop a different look at how the world sees you and how you see the world." Mitte recently appeared on the October 5 episode of “The Joe Vulpis” podcast, where he reflected on his role in Breaking Bad and where his character might be today. “[Walter Jr.] is going to school and taking care of his mom and his little sister and kind of, like, a dead-end type job, just trying to survive,” he predicted. Mitte was also known for his roles in Switched at Birth, The Guardians of Justice and Now Apocalypse. Mitte’s death comes one year after he announced his engagement to girlfriend Kennedy Suarez. “I’m thrilled to have found my person, my partner in life who makes me want to be better, no matter what we’re doing,” he told People at the time. “Kennedy is my everything and I can’t wait to officially start our life together and see what adventures life takes us on next.”
