Diet and mental health are linked, and one popular food early in life can be linked to the development of anxiety. muse studio – stock.adobe.comDecades of research have linked sugar to several adverse health effects in children: metabolic diseases, behavioral disorders and hyperactivity, tooth decay and childhood obesity.And now, one more can be added to the list: anxiety.Based on previous work linking sugary foods and mental health issues, researchers from the University of Surrey wanted to explore how dietary behavior influenced a person’s mental health into adulthood.“We were specifically interested in understanding if having sugar in early life could contribute to incidences of mental health issues such as depression and anxiety later in life,” lead study author Dr Hana Navratilova said in a press release.Analyzing medical data of over 45,000 UK Biobank participants, they found that exposure to sugar in the first 1,000 days of a child’s life increases the risk of developing anxiety in adulthood.They also found that sugar intake in early life significantly impacted brain development in 11 out of the 80 regions of the brain.Participants were divided into groups of those who experienced sugar rationing in utero, as well as up to six, 12, 18 and 24 months of age, and those who underwent rationing in utero only. Early exposure to sugar was linked to anxiety as adults, as well as significant developmental impacts on the brain. fizkes – stock.adobe.comThe risk of developing anxiety was lowest in those who were not significantly exposed to sugar in utero and during the first two years of life.Women who were not limited in how much sugar they were exposed to at a young age were also more likely to develop anxiety.And sugar exposure could influence diet in the long run, as those who were not exposed to sugar for the longest time (in utero and up to 24 months of age) reported a lower preference for sweet food as adults.“Despite increased sugar consumption after rationing amongst participants, early nutritional environments appear to have lasting relevance for mental health,” study author Professor Nophar Geifman said in a press release.One of the influencing factors of the data was the fact that the participants were born between 1951 and 1956, when post-war sugar rationing was still fully in place and through to when it was phased out.This time period was unique in that “so many people did not have excess sugar in their diets and then had it slowly phased in over a prolonged period of time,” according to Geifman.Major health organizations, including the  Department of Agriculture and Department of Health and Human Services, recommend that kids should consume under 25 grams of sugar per day.However, many are eating much more, consuming about 68 to 81 grams, thanks to ultra-processed foods like cookies, ice cream, sweetened drinks and more.Previous research has also found a strong link between unhealthy food and increased risk of depression, with artificial sweeteners and artificially sweetened beverages having the most impact on the chances of mental health issues.

In January, two 14-year-old boys went missing whilst out playing in a sandpit in Florida. The families of Derek Hubbard and George Watts have feared that they had fallen to their deaths in a hole. On Sunday, January 11, officials received a “frantic” call for help after the teenage best friends couldn’t be located at the sandpit close to Sportsman’s Park in Inverness, according to responding officers’ reports shared by the Citrus County Sheriff’s Office . Credit: GoFundMe When they didn't show up for lunch, the alarm was raised The emergency services were called by one of the boys’ parents after they went to search the sandpit but found only their bikes and shoes. Within 20 minutes of digging in the sand pit, the fire service pulled George from the cave-in, and authorities later declared that the friends had dug a hole approximately four to five feet deep before it collapsed on them both and ultimately killed them. It is believed they were trapped under the sand for between 30 and 60 minutes. One officer noted that George was “alive and had a pulse, however was not conscious or breathing on his own.” Tragically, when Derek was pulled out moments later, he was unresponsive and had no pulse. Credit: YouTube / EWU Bodycam Footage showing their final moments is a hard watch However, one of the most heartbreaking things to come out of the tragic accident is the bodycam footage of the boys’ parents' reactions to seeing their children being pulled from the sand. The devastated parents can be seen in hysterics as they realise the severity of the situation. Tear-jerking footage of the friend's final moments was also recovered from a phone belonging to one of the boys, showing them digging the hole and joking around with each other. A firefighter later explained that the boys appeared to have dug two connected tunnels and positioned themselves inside them while they were constructing them. Sadly, the tunnels then collapsed, trapping them beneath the sand and making escape impossible . Citrus County Sheriff’s Office said: “Our hearts are with both families as they grieve the tremendous loss of their sons. “We hope the community will continue to respect their privacy and unite in remembering and celebrating both boys.” In a social media post from the time, George’s stepmother Jasmine Watts, said: “Thank you for surrounding us with prayers, strength, and compassion during this unimaginable time. “Our sweet boy is so deeply loved, beyond words, and that love will always carry him.” Featured image credit: GoFundMe

While Stephens was ejected after the play as a result of the late hit, he did return to the USC sideline for the remainder of the game. USC coach Lincoln Riley explained that Stephens was allowed to come back because "he's on our football team." "Never want to see that with any opponent, no matter how competitive the game is," Riley said. "These are all people at the end of the day on both sides. So, wish him a speedy recovery." When Lanning was asked about USC appearing to celebrate the hit on the sideline, he denied seeing any of the players cheering in the wake of the injury. "I didn't see any of that, and if that's the way somebody else was operating, that's really disappointing," Lanning said, per CBS Sports. "In that moment, for me, I challenge myself to focus on the moment and things I can control. We try to have a singular focus. Our guys respect the game. I don't think that's necessarily an indictment on coach Riley, because I can't speak to what I didn't see.” Moore was replaced on the field by backup quarterback and Nebraska transfer Dylan Raiola, who later reflected on the moment. (Oregon ultimately won the game 41-27.) "The ultimate goal is to win," Raiola said, according to ESPN. "No matter how it happens, no matter, sadly, whoever goes down, the game of football doesn't feel sorry for us. We've got to step up, and we've got to keep fighting. Obtained by NY PostWhen Donny reached out to Amazon to complain about the whiz, he said Amazon called it a “horrible” incident and dropped a mere $50 gift card as their way of saying sorry.“I didn’t think that was appropriate for what had happened” Donny said. He refused the coupon, he added.Donny claims that he had several belongs soaked in the stranger’s urine including shoes, a chair and a table, which he said he had to throw out.He said he now fears that any time he lets a delivery driver into the building that they too will repeat the “foul” act.The delivery worker, who has not be identified, was seen on Ring camera footage moments before the incident. Obtained by NY Post“Now, every time an Amazon driver rings my doorbell, I have to go check the camera to make sure that he’s not peeing in my hallway,” said Donny.He also said that he worries about it happening in front of someone close to him, like his 5-year-old nephew who comes to visit him often.“He could have easily been there. My girlfriend could have walked out of the door and seen this happening while it was happening,” he said.Attorney Cary London at the firm Fredson Statmore Bitterman said that they are exploring possible litigation against Amazon.“We are exploring all legal avenues against Amazon,” London said. “But what we would really like to see is a change in Amazon’s policies — in addition to monetary compensation.”The delivery driver has not been identified.Amazon distanced itself from the deliveryman, saying he was not directly employed by the company but instead worked for one of the behemoth’s independent “Delivery Service Partners.”“This does not reflect the standards we expect from Delivery Service Partners,” Amazon spokesperson Leigh Anne Gullett said in a statement. “The individual is no longer delivering Amazon packages.”The delivery app provides drivers with locations where restrooms are available and routes include a 30-minute lunch and two additional 15-minute breaks.
