Former Cheerleader Laken Snelling's Sentencing Shocks Community After Tragic Event New

Former Cheerleader Laken Snelling's Sentencing Shocks Community After Tragic Event

Former University of Kentucky competitive cheerleader Laken Snelling has been sentenced to prison after causing the death of her newborn baby boy last year.  Snelling, 22, received a 10-year prison sentence on Friday, October 16. She faced a possible sentence of 13 years after pleading guilty in August to first-degree manslaughter, abuse of a corpse, tampering with physical evidence and concealing the birth of an infant. At the plea hearing, Snelling told the court, “Instead of helping him, I ended his life.” Fayette Circuit Judge Diane Minnifield sentenced Snelling to 10 years for manslaughter and one year each for the other charges, but ordered the sentences to run at the same time, rather than one after the other. Snelling, a former member of the University of Kentucky’s STUNT cheerleading team, was arrested in August 2025 after her roommates discovered a “blood-soaked towel on the floor and a plastic bag containing evidence of childbirth” in Snelling’s closet. The roommates called the police after finding the newborn’s body, which was cold to the touch. When Snelling was initially questioned by police, she “admitted to giving birth” and “concealing the birth by cleaning any evidence, placing all cleaning items used inside of a black trash bag, including the infant, who was wrapped in a towel.” Moments after giving birth, Snelling told authorities she had passed out on top of the baby’s body, waking up to find it “blue and purple.” When she was questioned by medical staff at the University of Kentucky Labor and Delivery, Snelling said “the baby made a ‘whimper,’ and that she ‘guessed’ the baby was alive,” according to a police report.  After being arrested and released on house arrest, Snelling was hit with an additional manslaughter charge in March after it was determined that her baby was alive at the time it was born. The Kentucky Medical Examiner’s Office determined the baby’s cause of death was “asphyxia by undetermined means.” Prosecutors did not charge Snelling with murder due to the “extreme emotional disturbance” she was under at the time, according to an indictment obtained earlier this year by Us. Snelling “intentionally abused the infant and thereby caused death to a person twelve (12) years of age or less, or who is physically helpless or mentally helpless,” per the indictment. At the time of her arrest, Snelling was a student-athlete at the University of Kentucky, where she majored in Interdisciplinary Disability Studies. Shortly after, a spokesperson for the school confirmed to Us that she was no longer enrolled.

Heartfelt Tribute: '9-1-1: Nashville' Honors Chad Lowe's Daughter Fiona New

Heartfelt Tribute: '9-1-1: Nashville' Honors Chad Lowe's Daughter Fiona

The 9-1-1: Nashville season 2 premiere featured a solemn tribute to Chad Lowe’s daughter Fiona, who died by suicide last month. “In Loving Memory,” read a title card shown at the end of the Thursday, October 15, episode, alongside Fiona’s name and photo. Chad, 58, has directed multiple episodes of both 9-1-1: Nashville and 9-1-1: Lone Star, which starred his brother Rob Lowe. He also portrayed Rob’s onscreen brother in a brief arc. (9-1-1: Lone Star aired for five seasons until its cancellation in 2025.) News broke in September that Chad’s daughter had died. She was 13. “We are deeply heartbroken by the loss of our beloved Fiona,” Chad and wife Kim Painter wrote in a joint statement, calling Fiona “a loving young girl who was smart, creative and loved to dance.” They continued at the time, “She was adored by her sisters and she was deeply loved by her parents. In fact, she was the light of our lives. Her passing is devastating for our entire family and we ask for prayers and privacy at this time. If you or someone you know is struggling with mental health, please reach out to the 988 Suicide & Crisis Lifeline by calling or texting 988.” Chad and Painter, 52, are also parents of daughters Mabel, 17, and Nixie, 10. Mabel has since been candid about grieving the loss of her sibling. “I love you so much, Fiona ❤️. I wish your short time here was easier and I hope your mind is at ease now,” she wrote via Instagram on October 3. “I will honor you forever and keep your memory alive. I love you, I hope you knew just how much.” Neither Chad nor Painter have further addressed Fiona’s death, with the Pretty Little Liars alum returning to social media on October 8 to repost a candid message about grief and healing. “We both possess the human and the divine,” Gerry Hussey said during a 2025 appearance on the “Of Healing” podcast, which Lowe shared via his Instagram Stories earlier this month. “Through consciousness and awareness when we awaken the peaceful observer and we get beyond our physical human emotions and our physical human needs and the needs of the ego, and we just let go and we release all that and we connect to a feeling, that is the divine frequency.” Two days after his social media return, Chad and Painter attended nephew Matthew Lowe’s wedding to now-wife Emily Markus. If you or someone you know is struggling or in crisis, help is available. Call or text 988 or chat at 988lifeline.org. 9-1-1: Nashville airs on ABC Thursdays at 9 p.m. ET.

Jon Gosselin's Bold Stand for Son Collin Amid Mental Health Controversy New

Jon Gosselin's Bold Stand for Son Collin Amid Mental Health Controversy

Jon Gosselin is one proud father in the wake of his son Collin Gosselin’s debut tell-all memoir. “First and foremost, I couldn’t be more proud of my son’s heartbreaking memoir and his mission to help other victims of abuse,” Jon, 49, exclusively told Us in a statement on Thursday, October 15, referring to Collin’s claims in his book, In the Shadow of Eight: Surviving the Reality of My Childhood, that he was abused by mom Kate Gosselin as a child. Jon — who rose to fame while starring on TLC’s Jon & Kate Plus 8 alongside his now-ex wife, Kate, 51, their twin daughters and sextuplets — also clapped back at allegations that Collin, 22, has mental health issues. “Also, let me be very clear: If you continue to falsely label my son Collin as ‘mentally ill,’ you will be held accountable,” he continued. “As you know, Collin has been evaluated by multiple independent psychiatrists, and that narrative is proven categorically untrue.” The former reality star noted, “Repeating false claims about his mental health is damaging to his reputation, his credibility and his future.” Jon concluded his statement by backing his son and the allegations made in his book. “Consider this fair warning: The days of using mental health to discredit and silence my son are over,” he said. Jon’s rep Adriane Schwartz, meanwhile, tells Us, "Jon has remained quiet to give Collin the space to share his story in his own voice. He fully supports his son and is incredibly proud of him. Collin deserves to be heard and treated with respect, and Jon stands firmly beside him.” Jon did not directly name who his comments were directed toward in his statement. However, Kate previously addressed "mental illness" in a comment on her TikTok earlier this week. In response to a fan who told Kate she was "doing a great job keeping [her] head up," the matriarch wrote, "I know rational logical [people] or anyone who has dealt with mental illness understands what’s going on here. I had nothing to do with it.” Like his father, Collin was thrust into the spotlight on Jon & Kate Plus 8, which debuted in 2007 and ended in 2009 after five seasons. On the show, Jon and Kate showed what it was really like raising twin daughters, Mady and Cara, now 26, and sextuplets Collin, Hannah, Leah, Alexis, Joel and Aaden, now 22. Jon and Kate’s messy custody battle became national news after their 2009 divorce. Ultimately, Collin and sister Hannah chose to live with their father, following a series of alleged traumatic events for Collin, in which he claimed that Kate sent him to a psychiatric hospital without telling Jon. Collin has also claimed that Kate was physically and emotionally abusive toward him from a young age and it only got worse when he rebelled against being on the TLC series. Us has reached out to Kate regarding her son’s memoir and numerous abuse claims but has not heard back at the time of publication. She has previously and consistently denied any wrongdoing. “She [stayed] for about 20 minutes,” Collin exclusively claimed to Us in his cover story of Kate’s visit to the hospital one year into his stay when he was 12. “Our conversation consisted of [her saying], ‘Collin, you destroyed our family.’ I was devastated.” Collin told Us his experience with his father was very different. He recalled Jon removing him from the hospital in 2018 after he discovered his location. "There was a point where we both were like, my god, like I was like wow, I didn't know that you were like going to court and trying to find out where it was. I didn't know that. We were just both kept in the dark,” Collin told Us. “He didn't know where was and I didn't know that he was trying or that he wanted anything to do with me. Because last I was told he didn't want anything to do with me." The Special Forces: World’s Toughest Test contestant explained, "So there was like this huge it was this crazy moment when I was like, ‘I was told I wasn't allowed to visit you,’ and he was told I didn't want to visit him and we just kinda sat down and hashed it all out and realized that we both wanted the same thing the whole time." Collin claimed that when his parents got divorced, "My dad was sent out of the home. I was told all these horrible things about him. I mean, that he was like the worst person that ever walked this planet. I mean, that's how my mother made it sound." Once he was able to see his dad again years later, he told Us it was clear that he “wasn’t this horrible monster that I’ve been told that he was.” “We were like two broken people trying to rebuild a relationship from scratch,” Collin said, reflecting on his teenage years with Jon. “I was like, ‘Who is this guy?’ and he felt like, ‘I don’t know how to be there for my son after everything he’s gone through.’ We worked on that, and now we’re closer than ever. Good things take time.” In the Shadow of Eight: Surviving the Reality of My Childhood is available for purchase online and in bookstores.

Baba Vanga's Startling 2027 Prediction: What It Means for Putin New

Baba Vanga's Startling 2027 Prediction: What It Means for Putin

Notorious Bulgarian prophet Baba Vanga had a chilling premonition for 2027 - one that specifically involves controversial Russian leader Vladimir Putin. Despite dying in 1996, Baba Vanga's prophecies are wide-ranging and stretch to hundreds of years into the future. The late mystic is widely regarded by her followers to have accurately predicted some major world events; from the events of 9/11 to the election of Barack Obama . Now, however, it seemed that Vanga's mystic vision has landed on Putin. And it could spell trouble. What was Baba Vanga's prophecy involving Vladimir Putin? The soothsayer apparently had something to say about changing tides in Russia at the start of the New Year. According to Baba Vanga, by the start of 2027, Russia's long-term leader would no longer be at the country's helm. This means, of course, that she predicts a change in current Russian leadership. Russia's current President, Vladimir Putin , has held continuous power in the country for nearly 27 years. Is this prediction to mean we can expect that to change? And what would a Putin-less Russia look like, and what would that mean for the geopolitical events such as the current war with Ukraine? The prophecy apparently concerns Russian leader Vladimir Putin. Credit: Contributor / Getty Images What are the other prophecies of Baba Vanga? Some of Vanga's prophecy for the next year on Earth point to a changing tide of chaos in many cases. The late mystic had, before her death 30 years ago, foreseen natural disasters devastating the planet all over, as well as an intensifying of worldwide conflicts possibly leading to a third World War. Fans of UFOs should also keep a look out to the skies next month. One of Vanga's more concrete predictions was that humans would make first contact with aliens in November 2026. Jumping a bit further into the future, Vanga notes 2028, just two years away, as an important time for humanity. That year will be a big one, she says, as we'll create a brand new source of energy. One perhaps less likely to come true (though you never know...) is that humanity is meant to develop "superpowers" within the next few years, according to the deceased soothsayer. If anyone suddenly knows how to fly or starts turning invisible... let us know! Despite dying in 1996, Vanga's gospel has been spread far and wide by her followers in the years since her death. One problem, however, is that the mystic never wrote down any of her prophecies in her lifetime - so the verification of any prophecies (or even if Vanga made them herself) is impossible. Dodgers' Alex Call Sparks Debate Over 'Soft Porn' Ads During Playoffs

Dodgers' Alex Call Sparks Debate Over 'Soft Porn' Ads During Playoffs

Los Angeles Dodgers outfielder Alex Call argued that scandalous commercials are getting in the way of passing down his love of baseball to his son.  “Can we please get the soft porn ads off playoff broadcasts, TBS, Fox, NBC, @MLB?” Call, 32, posted via X on Wednesday, October 14. “My son wants to watch baseball with Dada, but how do I justify that when a half-naked women could come on screen anytime?? This is America’s Pastime. Parents shouldn’t have to worry about this.” Alex and his wife, Samantha, share a son born in 2023 whose name has been kept private and daughter Reverie, 9 months.  The Dodgers player was responding to a social media post that wondered if Major League Baseball is interested in getting “more kids” watching the sport. “Maybe start with the commercials,” Utah-based entrepreneur Taylor Murphy wrote. “Watching the playoffs tonight with my kids and here's the rundown: Megan Fox selling ED pills in a red bodysuit. The scariest movie trailer you've ever seen. Sydney Sweeney in zero clothes promoting betting on sports.” He continued, “Leagues can't figure out why kids don't watch. You don't need a Nickelodeon game. You're not the Savannah Bananas. Just show baseball in a way I can leave on in my house.” Murphy’s post has gone viral since being posted Monday, October 12, earning over 31,000 likes.  Sweeney’s ad campaign for sports trading app NOVIG has been particularly controversial. The commercials, which have aired throughout the 2026 MLB Playoffs, feature the actress, 29, in various states of undress with sports equipment covering her naked body.  Sharon Stone, who costarred with Sweeney on HBO’s Euphoria, urged the young star to “take responsibility for her actions.” “It is up to me to be a cheerleader for the women who have made it through and become champions in women’s sports,” Stone, 68, told People last month. Call played in 88 games as a reserve outfielder for the Dodgers during the 2026 season. He has yet to see any postseason action.  The athlete shared photos of his family of four to celebrate Mother’s Day in May.  “You are the heart of our family,” Call wrote via Instagram. “When I’m gone for a week at a time, you’re home grinding it out, taking care of our kids with a kind of love and sweetness that bring me joy every time I think about it. Our family doesn’t work without you, and I don’t know what I would do without you. You’re my best friend. You make me happier than I ever knew was possible. There’s no one I’d rather do life with, raise these kids with, or come home to.” The Dodgers will attempt to avoid being swept by the Milwaukee Brewers in Game 4 of the National League Championship Series in Los Angeles on Thursday, October 15.

Maks Chmerkovskiy Questions DWTS Judge Over Controversial Lift Criticism

Maks Chmerkovskiy Questions DWTS Judge Over Controversial Lift Criticism

Maks Chmerkovskiy doesn’t understand Dancing With the Stars judge Carrie Ann Inaba’s criticism of his sister-in-law, Jenna Johnson, amid their tension-filled lift back-and-forth. “She goes and starts reading off the rulebook, but then that same rulebook that’s applicable in ballroom with lifts is only applicable to a couple dancing,” Chmerkovskiy, 46, said on the Thursday, October 15, episode of the “Viall Files” podcast. “You’re not talking about extra background dancers running out.” Johnson, 32, and celebrity partner Harry Shum Jr. performed a high-energy samba on Tuesday, September 13’s Super Bowl Night, for which Inaba, 58, docked points over an illegal lift. (While dancers aren’t allowed to take both feet off the ground in a traditional samba, two troupe dancers helped Shum, 44, do a backflip mid-routine.) “There’s no ‘three other people’ in the rulebook. The point is: Carrie Ann, get some consistency,” Chmerkovskiy quipped. “A lift is a lift if a partner lifted his partner. … If you’re going to have [the] troupe run out and throw someone in the air, that’s not a lift. That’s Dancing With the Stars creative direction, and you should complain to the creative director.” Chmerkovskiy’s wife, Peta Murgatroyd, also agreed with her spouse. (Maks’ brother, Val Chmerkovskiy has been married to Johnson since 2019.) “When I heard what she said about no one could lift the person, I agreed with Jenna in the fact, like, ‘Oh, so even if it’s not me, he can’t be lifted either,’” Murgatroyd, 40, said on Thursday’s episode. “I think maybe that would have been confusing for me too.” After Inaba’s critique, Johnson succinctly asked whether the move was in fact a lift. Maks, for his part, felt his sister-in-law’s comment was one of a “consummate professional.” Even so, Maks agreed with Inaba about the lack of samba skills displayed in the routine. “[She felt the] samba content wasn’t enough, and I agree,” he stated. “They gave too much of a nod to [Usher’s type] of movement and the movement quality, which is Harry’s card. … But samba didn’t play out, and I think that’s where Carrie Ann should have ended. To give it a lift situation, come on? Then, give him a 7, take the points [or] something. Why did you bring this up if you’re not going to do anything about it? That’s my problem.” Johnson has since spoken with Inaba, clarifying that she respects the judges’ feedback. “I hear Carrie Ann. She’s a judge for a reason,” Johnson told Extra after Tuesday’s episode. “She’s gonna do her job, I’m gonna do mine. I’m gonna take the feedback.” Dancing With the Stars airs on ABC and Disney+ Tuesdays at 8 p.m. ET.

UCSB Sorority Faces Backlash Over Alleged Discrimination Scandal

UCSB Sorority Faces Backlash Over Alleged Discrimination Scandal

A sorority scandal has erupted at one of America’s most notorious party schools after members accused an outside recruitment adviser of sidelining women of color, sparking a furious showdown inside their California chapter house. Sisters of the Alpha Phi sorority at the University of California, Santa Barbara, say they were left stunned when Black women and other women of color were allegedly excluded from recruitment activities while prospective members from diverse backgrounds mysteriously disappeared from the selection pool, according to the Daily Nexus. The explosive allegations have rocked the coastal campus, with outrage spilling onto social media and sorority sisters turning against the very leadership brought in to help them recruit new members.A sorority scandal has erupted at UCSB after members accused an outside recruitment adviser of systematically sidelining women of color. TIKTOK/@ucsbalphaphiSky Achola said she arrived at the house Sept. 27 expecting to meet prospective recruits, only to discover she had been left off the schedule entirely.“All of us started to notice,” chapter president Alana Nielsen told the student newspaper. “It was not just one. It was not just a few. It was not just the women of color. It was all of us.”The drama began during fall recruitment in late September, when Alpha Phi International sent three representatives to oversee the chapter’s annual rush process.Among them was a volunteer recruitment adviser who was also a UCSB Alpha Phi alumna and had assisted the chapter for the previous two years.Roughly 1,200 hopefuls initially participated in recruitment, according to the Santa Barbara News-Press.But after the first round on Sept. 26, sorority members were reportedly ordered to leave while the outside representatives determined which candidates would advance. The allegations have rocked UCSB students, with outrage spilling onto social media and sorority sisters turning against the very leadership brought in to help them recruit new members. UC Santa Barbara AlumniWhen the sisters returned, the pool had reportedly shrunk to approximately 250 women and members immediately noticed something troubling.“There was a large and noticeably diverse group of women who were missing from the pool of potential new members that had returned,” Nielsen told the Daily Nexus. The apparent shake-up was especially baffling because members had reportedly been told that roughly 90% of prospective recruits mutually wanted to return to Alpha Phi.Meanwhile, existing sisters of color were allegedly being pushed to the sidelines.Sky Achola, a Black sorority member and third-year political science major, said she arrived at the house Sept. 27 expecting to meet prospective recruits, only to discover she had been left off the schedule entirely.Alpha Phi sorority chapter president Alana Nielsen said she requested a chapter-wide meeting to address the concerns but was allegedly told by an outside representative that a discussion was unnecessary. Instagram/@alanaanielsenShe soon realized she wasn’t alone.“Pretty much all the women of color in my family system, except for my ‘little,’ who was white, were pulled from all the rounds,” Achola told the News-Press.Achola said she was eventually assigned to one recruitment round after members began raising questions.“I actually personally was in a state of shock for about three days,” she told the outlet. As the alleged discrimination became increasingly apparent, frustration inside the sorority house reached a boiling point.Nielsen said she requested a chapter-wide meeting to address the concerns but was allegedly told by an outside representative that a discussion was unnecessary and that the day should end on a “happy note.”Instead of sending the sisters home, Nielsen gathered members in the chapter room for an emotional confrontation. What followed was nothing short of a sorority revolt.Sky Achola, left, said she was extremely hurt by the alleged discrimination and was in shock for a few days after.“Girls [were] standing up screaming,” recruitment director Emerson Novosel told the Daily Nexus. “It [was] like a revolution happening right now. Like standing up, crying, screaming, and I had never felt so empowered.” Members demanded answers as some broke down in tears, accusing the outside leadership of betraying the chapter’s values. The volunteer adviser reportedly left the meeting after objecting to the confrontation. Later that night, chapter recruitment directors met with the two remaining international representatives and learned that the volunteer had been responsible for deciding which prospective members advanced and which sisters participated in recruitment groups, according to chapter leaders. The unidentified adviser was subsequently reported and removed from her position.Alpha Phi sorority members in Santa Barbara demanded answers as some broke down in tears, accusing the outside leadership of betraying the chapter’s values. TIKTOK/@ucsbalphaphi“It had [become] so disgustingly clear how it was just manipulation, just blatant manipulation to every part of the process with whatever her hidden agenda is,” Novosel told the Daily Nexus. The controversy quickly exploded across Yik Yak, the anonymous social media platform popular among college students, where posts demanding accountability racked up hundreds and sometimes more than 1,000 upvotes, per the News-Press.But the sisters insist they were victims of the alleged discrimination too.“The women of color in the sorority were discriminated against too,” Achola told the News-Press.Despite the uproar, Alpha Phi refused to abandon recruitment, with the national organization choosing instead to take control of the remaining process. The chapter ultimately filled its recruitment quota, leaving uncertainty over whether women allegedly excluded earlier could still receive invitations through a separate informal bidding process. On Oct. 1, members released a collective statement through an anonymous Instagram account, declaring they would fight for change from within.Achola said she was discriminated against and tokenized during the sorority process.“We have chosen to remain in the recruitment process because we believe that our members have the power to create meaningful change from within,” the statement read.Alpha Phi International later sent representatives from its health, wellness and accountability department to meet with chapter members, including at an Oct. 5 meeting.Nielsen said the chapter is collecting statements from members and pushing to overhaul recruitment procedures. For Achola, the fallout has been especially painful.“We were extremely hurt by this entire thing. We were discriminated against. We were tokenized. We were used,” she told the Daily Nexus. And while the sorority’s reputation has taken a beating, Nielsen insisted the sisters are determined to make sure the scandal doesn’t happen again.“That’s going to be a relationship that’s going to take a long time to repair,” she said of the chapter’s relationship with its national leadership. The California Post reached out to Alpha Phi International and UCSB for comment. Download The California Post App, follow us on social, and subscribe to our newsletters California Post News: Facebook, Instagram, TikTok, X, YouTube, WhatsApp, LinkedInCalifornia Post Sports Facebook, Instagram, TikTok, YouTube, XCalifornia Post Opinion California Post Newsletters: Sign up here!California Post App: Download here!Home delivery: Sign up here!Page Six Hollywood: Sign up here!

Madonna's Emotional Tribute to Daughter Lourdes Sparks Conversations

Madonna's Emotional Tribute to Daughter Lourdes Sparks Conversations

Madonna’s little girl is all grown up! The “Danceteria” singer, 68, celebrated her daughter, Lourdes “Lola” Leon, turning 30 on Wednesday, October 14, with a sweet Instagram post paying tribute to her eldest. Madonna shared a series of rare photos and videos of Lourdes on Wednesday, ranging from her childhood to present day, and wrote a sweet message to her daughter. “Happy Birthday My Lolita! You came to me in a Dream. A fever dream. A Dream called Life. If I tried to write it all down, I would cry a river of tears,” Madonna wrote. She continued, “Your chin was tilted up in my birth canal, you were looking for the stars you were stuck. After 18 hours of labor and your heartbeat slowing down, an emergency C-section was the only option. Did I mention the helicopters and news crews swirling above our heads on the top floor of the hospital in East LA? You’re [sic] birth was dramatic. Like our lives.” “Our connection - it is Biblical. When I ask God to explain it to me He tells me- Look in the mirror!” the pop star wrote. “We are Two side sides of the same coin. If what we risk reveals what we value then I would risk it all on you.” “Never forget who you are- Little Star, shining brighter than all the stars in the sky. Never forget how to Dream, Butterfly,” Madonna added. “Never forget where you come from. From Love. ♥️” Madonna welcomed Lourdes with ex Carlos Leon in 1996. She later gave birth to son Rocco, 26, whom she shares with filmmaker ex-husband Guy Ritchie, in 2000. Madonna went on to adopt son David, 21, and daughter Mercy, 20, from Mawali in 2006 and 2009, respectively, followed by twin daughters Stella and Estere, 14, in 2017. Madonna recently collaborated with her eldest daughter on her hit album Confessions II, which was released in July. “Now that I’ve gotten through it and so many very important things have happened to me along the way,” the pop icon said of the album while speaking to Interview magazine earlier this year. “For instance, the song I wrote with my daughter, Lola. She approached me about writing a song together as a way to heal our relationship. It was a really important moment, and it solidified the idea that now is the time to make this record.” Confessions II topped the Billboard 200 chart in July, marking Madonna’s 10th No. 1 in her career.

Anna Gunn's Heartfelt Tribute to RJ Mitte: 'In My Heart Forever'

Anna Gunn's Heartfelt Tribute to RJ Mitte: 'In My Heart Forever'

Anna Gunn will always have a special place in her heart for her Breaking Bad son, RJ Mitte, following his death by suicide. "I'll never forget meeting RJ when he was only 14 years old," Gunn, 58, said in a statement to Us on Wednesday, October 14. "I was immediately struck by the depth and complexity of someone so young.” After playing his TV mom, Skyler White, for five seasons on the hit AMC series, Gunn called Mitte a “gentle and bold, exceedingly kind, and wickedly funny" person who was "a bit rebellious (like any teenager) yet eager to learn and hone his craft” as an actor. Mitte, for his part, portrayed Walter “Flynn” White Jr., the son of Skyler and Bryan Cranston’s Walter White. (Mitte died by suicide on Monday, October 12, at the age of 34.) “Above all, he was doggedly determined that his disability would not impede him, but would instead give him the opportunity to enlighten and educate others through his nakedly truthful portrayal of Walt 'Flynn' Jr.,” Gunn said, referring to Mitte’s diagnosis with cerebral palsy at age 3. Gunn noted that the entire Breaking Bad family was “lucky” that Mitte “lit up our lives” for so long. "How lucky I was to play his TV mom, to watch him evolve and expand as an actor and human being as the seasons went by, and for all the years after as he continued to serve his community with tireless advocacy and philanthropic work,” she gushed. “I was so proud of him; we all were.” She continued, "There truly are no words to express the heartbreak of a loss this profound, the loss of a beautiful young man who had such an impact upon this world, with still so much ahead of him.” The Emmy winner explained that in the wake of her former costar’s death and amidst so much profound sadness, she is deciding to focus on the positive. "What I choose to remember and cherish today are the quiet, personal moments I shared with my beloved TV son," she continued. "Moments of mutual support and understanding, of belly-aching laughter and silliness, of care and deep love. You live in my heart forever, my dearest RJ." Gunn’s heartfelt tribute comes just days after Mitte’s rep confirmed his death by suicide in Texas. “It is with profound sadness that we share the tragic passing of beloved actor, philanthropist, and passionate disability rights advocate RJ Mitte,” his rep said in a statement to Us on Monday. He added, “Beyond entertaining friends and family around the world, he served as an ambassador for United Cerebral Palsy and Shriners Children’s. He also served as president of The Mitte Foundation, supporting philanthropic efforts and community initiatives, while using his platform to challenge stereotypes and promote greater representation for people with disabilities.” Since his death, the Breaking Bad cast has shared sweet messages of sympathy while reminiscing on their time with Mitte, including tributes from Cranston, 70, and Aaron Paul, who played Jesse Pinkman. “We were texting each other just a few weeks ago — figuring out when we could meet for lunch,” Cranston wrote via Instagram. “I don’t know if that lunch would have changed his future… But I do know that I loved him, and thoroughly enjoyed being with him throughout the years on the series, and after the spotlight on Breaking Bad dimmed… I’ll miss you, son.” Paul, 47, penned his own social media tribute, writing, “I’m so sorry RJ. What an absolute tragic loss. I love you my friend. I loved your mother. Your sister. I loved your laugh and how much fun you had riding the wave we were all blessed to be on with Breaking Bad.” If you or someone you know is struggling or in crisis, help is available.
